Company profile

ÖkoFEN is Europe's specialist for really green heat. The family-run company employs several hundred people. Company founder Herbert Ortner developed Europe's first type-tested pellet heating system in 1997. In 1999, the serial development and production of pellet boilers began. Four years later, ÖkoFEN launched the world's first pellet heating system with condensing technology. The next milestone followed in 2015 with the first electricity-producing pellet boiler. 2021 saw a quantum leap with the innovative ZeroFlame® combustion technology. Pellet boilers with ZeroFlame® technology achieve emissions close to zero.

Now ÖkoFEN is also offering a smart air-to-water heat pump, the world first GreenFOX®, which can optimise electricity consumption ecologically based on data and automatically. With this world first, which automatically recognises when electricity is not only cheap but also clean on the basis of weather and CO2 data, electricity exchange prices and PV electricity production, ÖkoFEN, the specialist for pellet heating systems and green energy, is setting new standards for a truly renewable mode of operation. A patent application has been filed for the company's proprietary control technology. The intelligent, energy-optimised concept is also reflected in the product name: GreenFOX® - heat pump, but smart. With high flow temperatures (65 degrees Celsius) and a system output of up to 14 kilowatts, this new product scores highly both in new builds and when replacing heating systems. With outstanding efficiency values (COP greater than five) and a sound power level of 45.2 dB (A), the heat pump from ÖkoFEN is at the top end of the German market.

Decarbonisation in the heating sector is an important component for the success of the energy transition. The clever GreenFOX® heat pump - with really green energy therefore has enormous potential and perfectly complements the portfolio of climate-friendly wood pellet heating systems.

To date, over 180,000 ÖkoFEN systems have been installed worldwide and sales subsidiaries have been established in 21 countries. In 2006, a 15,000 square metre company headquarters with administration and distribution warehouse was built in Mickhausen near Augsburg (Bavaria) in line with the latest ecological findings. The company building was constructed as a low-energy building and is naturally heated with pellets and supplied with 100% green electricity. To meet the increasing demand for climate-friendly heating systems, ÖkoFEN added a third hall to the logistics centre in 2022 and is planning a new training centre for the ÖkoFEN Academy.
